Bronchitis is a serious but common inflammatory condition of the lungs. Inflammation of the lungs causes redness, swelling, mucus production, and pain. There are two types of bronchitis: acute and chronic. In acute bronchitis, inflammation occurs as a result of a cold, sore throat, or viral infection. Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a dry cough that progressively becomes productive. Prolonged acute bronchitis that continues for several weeks often develops into pneumonia. In chronic bronchitis, inflammation occurs as a result of exposure to tobacco smoke or other irritants. Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, severe coughing, and phlem. Prolonged chronic bronchitis with coughing that lasts over many years can lead to permanent damage of lung tissue causing disability or even death.

If youve never experienced the pain of an inflamed sciatic nerve, consider yourself very lucky. For those who have suffered and continue to suffer, the condition is likely to provoke unpleasant memories, and is enough to strike fear in those who have been previously victimized by pain of that nature. While there may be a number of different words patients use to describe the painful sensations caused by an inflamed sciatic nerve, there are certain descriptions that seem to be reported quite consistently. An inflamed sciatic nerve might start off seeming like a cramp; this might occur in the area of the leg, the back, or both. As the inflammation increases, the pain in the back also worsens and more often than not is experienced in combination with painful sensations down the buttock area and continues down one leg. In addition to the pain, an inflamed sciatic nerve usually creates tingling and a feeling of numbness. Muscle weakness is also often described as occurring. At its worst, sciatic nerve pain can feel like an electric shock that shoots down the back and into the leg.

Hampstead Heath this morning was beautiful but treacherous and all of a sudden, as is usual with such things, I fell over on the ice. One minute I was walking along chatting and the next minute I was on my bottom as my wrist, forearm, shoulder and buttock took a bash. I slid sideways fast in the fall, thereby distributing the blow to several parts of my body and reducing its impact, entirely by luck. So I escaped joining the legions of people who, over the UK Christmas festivities, suffered a fall as the weather managed to concoct a particularly tricky combination of sub-zero temperatures and sharp showers.
